Design systems fail quietly. They look impressive in a kickoff, then erode under deadline pressure until every screen is a special case again.
Survival is not about documenting every atom. It is about making the right defaults easier than improvisation.
Optimize for the next twelve tickets
Start with the components and tokens your product will touch constantly — buttons, forms, spacing, type, cards. Perfect coverage of rare patterns can wait.
Partner with engineering early
A system that only lives in Figma is a style guide. A system that ships as shared code becomes leverage. Designers and engineers should co-own naming, states, and accessibility.
Allow governed exceptions
Roadmaps will demand one-offs. Document them, time-box them, and schedule reconciliation. Pretending exceptions will not happen is how systems rot.
Useful systems reduce decision fatigue. That is the test — not the size of the library.
